We are currently seeking a Freelance WordPress Developer whose primary purpose is to build and maintain WordPress websites, themes, and plugins. This role reports to the Technical Director at Art & Science.
Inclusivity and accessibility:
Art & Science is an inclusive, diverse and accessible work environment. We strongly encourage applications from women, racialized people, Indigenous peoples, people from gender-diverse and sexually-diverse communities, people with disabilities (visible or non-visible), people of different religious backgrounds, people with family caregiving responsibilities and/or people with intersectional identities.
Who we are:
Art & Science is a full-service marketing agency with pillars in strategy, brand & communication, media & analytics and experiential marketing campaigns. With a ten-year, award-winning history working with some of the biggest brands in Canada, we continue to experience growth and success. At Art & Science, we pride ourselves on blending creativity with technology to produce incredible results for our clients. We are not only committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion but we walk the talk and have built a strong culture based on those values.
What you will do:
Build WordPress sites from start to finish
We are looking for a developer who can take on a WordPress project from inception to launch. You will be responsible for building WordPress websites following WordPress development best practices, writing queries, hooking into various WordPress APIs to customize functionality, and configuring custom post types and taxonomies. You will leverage modern front-end tools, technologies, and techniques to build high performance and accessible themes meeting WCAG 2.1 AA guidelines.
Maintain existing WordPress websites
You will work within existing legacy WordPress sites and implement ad-hoc changes, new functionality, and/or keep them up to date (WP Core and plugins).
Develop themes using ACF and Elementor
Work with a defined WordPress toolset that includes Advanced Custom Fields and Elementor. We’re not quite ready to jump on the Gutenburg train but we are starting to explore WP Engine Atlas and other headless WordPress applications. We stay away from multi-use themes like Avada and X themes and prefer to build bespoke using _s or something similar.
Integrate WordPress plugins
You will work with a variety of WordPress plugins as business needs require. Integrations may include contact forms, social networks, third-party integrations (CRMs, email marketing, etc), approval/workflow plugins, and so on.
Participate as a member of the team
You will be responsible for joining weekly or bi-weekly scrums, contributing to team discussions, participating on our shared project Slack channel, and welcome code reviews and QA remediation. You will work closely with a diverse group of individuals including the technical director, other developers, project managers, designers, and others as the needs of the project dictate.
About you:
You are passionate about WordPress
You are passionate about WordPress. You look forward to your next WordCamp and keep up to date with new features and functionality. You know when to use a plugin vs code something from scratch. You know the difference between a filter and an action and aren’t afraid to use them.
You are passionate about back-end and front-end experience
As a back-end developer you know there are dozens of different ways to build a WordPress theme and you think about others on the team who might inherit the project when deciding on your approach. You can think like a client and design functional back-end interfaces using ACF.
As a front-end developer you know how important it is to optimize for fast load times, core web vital scores, and conversions. You leverage modern image formats, work to minimize code bloat, and know your DRY principles (and when to break them).
You pride yourself on your attention to detail when implementing designs, composing interactions, and animations.
You are self-directed and organized
As a successful freelance developer you aren’t just a great developer but also know how to keep your business relationships healthy. You can prepare estimates, flag issues ahead of time, join scrums, adapt/follow development workflows, proactively communicate, and submit timesheets and invoices on time.
