Our (currently under-utilized) office is located in Toronto, Ontario in the heart of the creative district. We are seeking a dedicated and analytical Finance Manager to join our Operations team and set up success for our agency, teams and projects.

What you will do: 

  • Ensure appropriate cash flow through conducting all regular financial operations; You will have ownership over full cycle accounting and all financial aspects of Art & Science. This includes operations for billing, AR/AP functions, cash flow, expense management, banking, bi-weekly payroll, quarterly, and yearly forecasting. As well as on a monthly basis; P&L reporting, balance sheet management, project and department profitability. Since you will have an in-depth understanding of our various banking accounts, you will keep a watchful eye on transactions to ensure payments are being issued and received under the correct accounts 
  • Evaluate, create and improve finance systems to create timely, complete and accurate reporting; As the first full time financial hire, you will be tasked with understanding existing processes in place,  improve our current financial system and create new processes where needed. By evaluating and recognizing areas for improvement you will work with the President, external bookkeeper, part-time CFO and accountants to establish the workflows and processes needed to establish accurate reporting. More specifically you will establish a regular weekly, monthly, quarterly, and yearly procedures for financial reporting that ensure timeliness and accuracy. You will also create an annual operating plan that reflects our current business strategy. 
  • Support department and project leaders in reaching profitable outcomes; you will be deeply immersed in the financial inputs and outputs of each department, a trusted advisor to team leaders as well as a financial liaison with external auditors to coordinate the annual year end close. You will be in the unique position to offer your perspective during project meetings and provide sound financial advice that is rooted in general business knowledge. After creating regular reporting structures for each department, you will act as a translator for leaders in interpreting their team’s financials (eg. gross margins, expenses & budgets). You will impart your knowledge and expertise unto leaders in a digestible manner that raises their financial acumen  on projects and allows them to identify key financial aspects that lead to profitability. Additionally, you will collaborate with the VP, Client Services during sales outlook meetings where you will review data to determine weak points on the horizon and help strategize for overall sales, planning and team forecasting. 
  • Identify efficiency and cost-saving opportunities; your forecasts will allow you to find opportunities for investments and cost-saving opportunities. As a key contributor to our agency’s dedication to continuous improvement, we will rely on your efficiency-oriented mindset and analytical lens to identify and recommend cost saving opportunities for our agency, teams and projects as well as help implement levers to ensure we’re achieving our financial targets . 

Who you are:

  • Your top traits are reliability and trustworthiness; as the Finance Manager and the only fully-dedicated Finance employee on the team, you will solely be entrusted to own all financial operations at our agency. Given your experience, you are comfortable managing operations totaling $10-15M in revenue with rapid growth on the horizon. As a result you’ll be able to provide great references that support these traits and you’ll pass all background checks, including (criminal and bankruptcy) with ease.
  • You are equipped with strong finance knowledge & experience; you have worked in a similar role in an agency or a service-based organization where your focus was on project and department profitability and understand how it leads into corporate financial statements. You have a CPA, CGA, CMA, CA or equivalent technical experience. From a career perspective, you’re looking to put down your roots in an organization for the long term to enhance what is currently in place and be fully immersed in operations.
  • You don’t mind being in the weeds; you have a “roll-up-the-sleeves” attitude and love checking things off your to-do list. While you have a broad view of business, you enjoy the hands-on side of financial management and have no problem going deep into the numbers. As the sole financial hire you enjoy taking ownership over even the smallest task and pride yourself on your attention to detail. 
  • You have a solid business background and can connect accounting and business strategy; you are able to see beyond the numbers and connect what they display to various business challenges, project details and sales strategies. Not only can you make these connections but you enjoy, and are skilled at communicating those to others with whom  you work.

In addition to your salary of $90,000, your compensation package includes a comprehensive health benefits plan, 3 weeks vacation, flexible schedule, education benefits and other agency paid time off throughout the year. This position is hybrid so if you’re in the Toronto area, we’d love to see you in the office from time to time!
